This is a graphic representing the various groups of people that were killed in the Iraq conflict. The square on the right has deaths ordered chronologically, the one on the left by type. It shows how data can be obscured/revealed by different representations.
Birth of the pie chart
Florence Nightingale was presenting data on deaths in the Crimea to a parliamentary committee. Previously trends in this data were obscured by the fact it was just a sheet of numbers. But Nightingale invented the pie chart to display this data to the parliamentarians. It was understood and she got her point across.
